Think of your boards as different rooms in your home. You have your bedroom where you put your bed and other items that just go in the bedroom . Then you have your kitchen – items just for the kitchen. Dining room – items like a dining room table. 

Your boards are the same way. Whatever categories you have on your website you want to carry them over to your Pinterest boards.

You also want to make sure your Board title has a strong SEO keyword(s). You can do this by putting the keyword you are thinking about using into Pinterests search bar. Then a bunch of suggestions will pop up under the search bar. The first one is the strongest and most searched keyword(s), and then it moves down the line. But make sure the keywords are significant to your Board and what you will be pinning on that Board.

You want to set up 5 – 10 boards on your Pinterest account at the beginning and you can always add more as you go along.

I design all my pins using Canva. Canva is so easy to learn and it’s Free. They do have a paid version, which I subscribe to, but when first starting, I used the free version. And they also have a lot of tutorials to help get you started.

The optimal pin size of your pin should be 1000 x 1500. If you are using Canva they have a drop down menu when you click on the Create a Design tab. Just scroll until you find Pinterest Pin.

When designing your pin, keep in mind the following:

  • Power word or trigger word – this helps create interest in your pin. Using words like Epic, Ultimate, Rock-Solid, Last Chance, etc. are considered power words, which pulls people in. For a great list of power words, check out this list. It’s the best one I’ve seen.
  • Using different fonts – this will help specific words stand out that you are promoting.
  • Using different font sizes – once again, will help certain words stand out over other words.
  • Your image – make sure it goes with what you are promoting.
  • Add your website name or Etsy shop name, etc. at the bottom so people will know that this is your pin. 

Make sure you stay consistent with your pinning. This is really important. You want to try to add Pins every day, even if it’s just one Pin. Pinterest loves consistency.

Creating a posting strategy means understanding your audience, asking yourself the questions of “Who are they?”, “What are their interests?”, “What kind of content matters to them?”, and “What format makes the most sense for each piece of content?”. 

You also need to think about timing for each post – when your audience will be most likely to consume and engage with the content. 

You want to keep track of what time you post your pins and rotate the times you post. Do this for 30 days so when you are checking your Pinterest Analytics you will see when you are getting the most Outbound clicks. By keeping track of your times, you will know what times are the best for your business to be pinning based on your Outbound clicks (clicks that are going to your website or whatever link you used).

For example, let’s say you are pinning five pins everyday – one at 10:00 am; one at noon; one at 4:00 pm; one at 7:00 pm; and one at 8:30 pm. And then the next day you change up the times (remember – keep a record of what times you pin) – and you keep changing up the times for a month. 

Then after 30 days you notice that most of your outbound clicks are between the hours of 6:30 pm and 9:00 pm – now you know what times you should be pinning most of your pins.

It all depends on what your product or service is, and also how inviting your pins are. 

And your keywords will change all the time. What’s a good keyword today may not be as popular two weeks down the road.
